Annually hundreds of thousands of tons of fruit peels, seeds and sugar beet pulp, a side stream of sugar production, pile up without high value utilisation. They contain pectin. Currently this treasure is mainly a problem, it is used for landfills or dryed for cattle feed which is quite costly.
This example demonstrates a biotechnology case in a chain of technologies, patented by VTT, where we can turn this pectin feedstock, into platform chemicals which in turn can be further processed for numerous applications.
