Another abundant feedstock - readily available for biotechnological utilization, are the food industry side streams. Microbes are naturally adapted to feed on carbohydrates that are inedible for humans.
A Finnish insulation company called Finnfoam has developed a bio-based alternative to the fossil-based polystyrene insulation material using a food industry side stream as feedstock for the microbes. This case example takes us from a bold idea to lab scale concepting and finally scaling up and piloting.
